NECW is once again innovating. Tonight the company celebrated tag team wrestling with a tournament which included the current title holders putting their belts on the line. The presentation of local talent from around New England, including notable stars from the southern part of the area, made this a special night. The Middlesex Express made their debut. A treat was seeing stars from Combat Zone Wrestling, from another wrestling hot spot, Philadelphia.
The night began with the always annoying Richard Holliday barging in to Mr. Richard’s welcome to the fans and insisting on being added to the Triple Threat TV Championship match. He presented a legal injunction to The GM. Mr. Goldberg was not amused. He acquiesced to the legal maneuver but added his own condition: The match would be a No DQ.
1. The Middlesex Express (Steven Broad & Steven Lust) v. The Heavy Hitters (Frank Champion and Shay Cash). W – The Heavy Hitters
The Middlesex Express were outsized by the Heavy Hitters. It took them a bit of time to get a game plan going but once they did they put their usual intensity into making Cash & Champion miserable. Lust & Broad did a good job of beating on the big men, despite the fans being completely against them and suggesting vocally that the men from Lowell were “Trash”. In the end, Frank Champion did what he does best – power slamming Steven Lust who could not recover. Clean pin. The HH advance to Round 2.
2. Richard Holliday & Big Jym Anderson v. Adrenaline Rush (Keith Youngblood & Dangerous Daniel Evans). – Adrenaline Rush (DQ)
Big Jym was a no-show and the three wrestlers milled about until Beau Douglas entered the ring demanding what Kevin Castro had promised him last month: a shot at a title. He wanted to be in the TV Championship match (a title he vacated due to injury but never lost). The other wrestlers decided to beat down The Living Legend who was knocked out temporarily. Adrenaline Rush wins by default and advances to round 2.
3. Five Star Spectacle (Five Star Jace & JC Rodrigues with Honest Abe) v. The Kool People (DJ AC & Sammy Deleon). W – The Kool People
Jace and JC had the momentum and might have bested The Kool People when Honest Abe decided to throw some power into TKP’s faces. He missed and disabled Jace. DJ AC reacted quickly and pined Jace. Abe was whining to the fans and his team about how it wasn’t his fault as he was led out of the ring area covered in talc. Kool People advance to Round 2.
4. The Rep (Nate Carter & Dave McCall) v. The Stacked Deck (Cruisin Chris Cruise & Mike Montero). W – The Rep
The Rep are superstars from one of the top promotions in The Northeast, Combat Zone Wrestling. They seemed a bit surprised at the opposition given them by Cruise and Montero. Montero is a master of super kicks which he used to great effect. Mr. McCall put a stop to all that when he pinned Montero. The Rep advances to Round 2.
ROUND 1 FINALISTS: The Heavy Hitters, Adrenaline Rush, Kool People, The Rep
5. The Rep (Nate Carter & Dave McCall) v. The Kool People (DJ AC & Sammy Deleon). W – The Kool People
The Rep once again got more than expected in Deleon and AC. Sammy sacrificed himself to a prolonged beating which tired the other team leading to a Kool People double team of Carter and a pin that appeared to this reporter to be only a 2 count but Referee Mahoney counted three. Kool People move on to finals.
6. The Heavy Hitters (Frank Champion and Shay Cash) v. Adrenaline Rush (Keith Youngblood & Dangerous Daniel Evans). W – Adrenaline Rush (New Champions)
After a nice pre-bell Pearl Harbor job on The Heavy Hitters, Adrenaline Rush were smart. Instead of trying to beat the big man who outweighs them by perhaps 80 pounds, they focused relentlessly on Mr. Champion’s knee. Evans neutralized Cash with a chair (unseen by Referee Hill). To be honest The Hitters got the s*&t beaten out of them (a rare occurrence). Adrenaline Rush take the title and move on to finals.
7. Fatal 4 Way for Television Championship: Kris Pyro (C) v. “The Almighty” Anthony Stone v. Richard Holliday v. “The Funny Man” Devin Blaze. W – Blaze (New Champion)
The best part of this match was watching Loudmouth Richard Holliday get eliminated early and first. This was due to the intervention (completely fair as it was unseen by the Referee) of The Premiere Wrestler in New England; Sensational Scott Levesque. Holliday several months ago stole Big Jym Anderson from Levesque in a betrayal that cost the top man his shot at the Television Title. Payback is sweet.
Pyro, Blaze, and Stone are all top competitors and put on the match of the night. Any time “The Hardcore Jesus” Anthony Stone is in the house, you know you are in for a wrestling clinic. Blaze very definitively beat Pyro after getting rid of Stone. There was no question about it. After a prolonged and scary spot on the top ropes, Blaze capitalized on his moment. Blaze is the new Television Champion.
8. Kool People (Sammy Deleon & DJ AC) v. Adrenaline Rush (Keith Youngblood & Dangerous Daniel Evans – Champions). W – Kool People (New Champions)
These are both relatively young teams (we’ve watched both go from rookies to established workers). It started with AR leaving the room and being dragged back against their will by The Kool People. It seemed that momentum would be with Adrenaline Rush given their gaining the titles less than one hour before. The fulcrum of the match was Youngblood’s cane. Unfortunately for him, Shay sneaked in and used it against him, unseen by Referee Hill who was unconscious after a double beat down by Adrenaline Rush. (They were likely going for the DQ to keep their new belts). This didn’t work anyway, Referee Mahoney ran in and counted 3 on a Kool People pin. Kool People win both the tournament and the titles.
